[ARCHIVED] CommUnity Thanksgiving Celebration Proclamation

CommUnity

Members of the CommUnity Thanksgiving Celebration Committee were honored with a proclamation at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, November 7th. Mayor Guyton stated in the proclamation, “I Sherman Guyton, Mayor of  the City of Gadsden, along with Gadsden City Council members do hereby proclaim November 23rd, 2017 as CommUnity Thanksgiving Celebration Day in Gadsden.”
Mayor Guyton shared that since its start in 1998, CommUnity Thanksgiving has brought together 5900 volunteers to serve more than 45,649 Thanksgiving meals to the citizens of Gadsden throughout Etowah County; 5000 more meals are expected to be served this year at CommUnity Thanksgiving’s 19th event.
Funds for the event are generously donated by individuals, churches, and businesses.
Vicki Lister accepted the award on behalf of the CommUnity Thanksgiving Celebration Committee. After thanking the Mayor, City Council members and citizens of Etowah County, Lister shared that “last year we served 4929 meals; 1200 of those were delivered throughout Gadsden and Etowah County, mostly to elderly, homebound people; some who may not see another face on Thanksgiving Day.”
In 2016, the event saw 710 volunteers from the area which Lister feels says a lot about the community.
The CommUnity Thanksgiving Celebration will begin serving hot meals at 10 a.m. on November 23rd at Convention Hall. For more information, or to discuss volunteer opportunities, please call 256-546-4357 or 2-1-1 and enter zip 35901.
