Public Works

Responsibilities

Public Works is responsible for drainage and storm water management, mosquito control, streets, sidewalks, signs and signal maintenance, mowing of right of way (vegetation control), garbage and trash services, inert landfill and the recycling program.

Divisions

Environmental Services Transfer Station and Inert Landfill 

This department is responsible for the inert landfill, which accepts only construction demolition debris. The city recycles wood material (ground limbs, leaves, and trees) into mulch for free distribution. In addition, large metals are also collected for recycling. Furthermore, this department operates the city’s transfer station which consists of receiving and hauling all garbage to a certified subtitle D landfill. This department is also responsible for debris pickup curbside.


Environmental Services Sanitation Department 

Located at the site of the city’s transfer station, this department is responsible for automated garbage collection. 


Street Sign & Paint Department 

This department is under the direct supervision of the Street Maintenance Department. It is responsible for all street signs and striping on city streets.


Street Maintenance and Street Cleaning 

Street maintenance is responsible for maintaining the city’s streets, sidewalks, and rights of way. Additional responsibilities include:

Asphalt patching, Curb and gutter repairs, Ditching, Inlet cleaning, Side walk, Small construction project, Tree and limb removal, etc. In addition, this department is responsible for traffic signalization within the city limits.

The Street Cleaning Department is responsible for:

Leaf collection and all grass mowing of all right of way medians and rights of way on city streets, Mosquito control, Street sweeping, Street washing. We are also responsible for all liter control through the City of Gadsden.
