CITY ELECTIONS
Schedule and Details

An election for the positions of mayor and seven council members will be conducted this summer.  Although candidates might begin actively campaigning much earlier, the official qualifying period will begin on Tuesday, July 6, 2010.  The deadline for candidates to qualify is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, and the qualifying fee is $50.   Candidates must reside within the city (or the district for council seats) for at least 90 days prior to the election to qualify.  The final date to establish residency for candidates is May 26, 2010.

Election day is Tuesday, August 24, and a runoff election (if necessary) will be held on Tuesday, October 5.  The next administration will begin on Monday, November 1, when newly elected city officials take office.

Other elections are being held this year for county and state offices, which are totally separate from the city election process.  The primary was held on June 1 and the runoff will be July 13.  The general election will be November 2.  Some voters will not vote in the same location on those dates.

The city clerk's office will mail postcards to Gadsden city voters concerning the August 24 and October 5 mayor/council elections.  If you are a city voter and you do not receive a postcard, please contact the City Clerk's office at 549-4516.  Or, feel free to call if you simply wish to double-check your information and your voting location.

One of the most important goals of the city clerk is to make sure that voters' information is up to date and accurate.  There is a state-wide system for voter records, and changes, as well as new registrations, are entered by the Etowah County Board of Registrars.  Please remember that there is no automatic update that will occur when you move, and voters must complete a written update form.  If you wish to check the accuracy of your information, please call (256) 549-5384.
