| Q. |
Hydrant Testing and Business Inspections |
| A. |
The fire department is mandated by the Insurance Service Organization (ISO) to do in-service duties . Those of you who do not know what ISO does, ISO is the organization which set the insurance classification for the city, in other words, helps determine what your fire insurance premiums will be. Twice every year the department will be in the neighborhoods testing fire hydrants. This helps keep the hydrants flushed from any foreign debris but more importantly the test provides information concerning pressure and the amount of water available at each hydrant. The hydrant is then painted a specific color to correspond to the range of gallon per minute that the hydrant is capable of producing. For example a green top hydrant will provide 1000 to 1500 gallons per minute (gpm). Another service mandated by ISO is prefire planning. Every year we will have a fire department representative in each commercial business to do a prefire plan and fire company familiarization inspection. If you have a specific time that you would like for us to visit please contact the Fire Administrative Office.

If you have something to burn at your residence contact our non-emergency number. A fire department representative will be sent to determine if the material is feasible to burn. If approved, we will issue a burn permit. The fire department is involved in many community services. The Alabama Department of Emergency Management has imposed a NO-BURN effective May through November.

Public Education |
| A. |
Presently we are coordinating with the school system with two different curriculums; one is a Learn Not to Burn Program, the other is a Risk Watch program. Safety trailer (Smokehouse)- The department has a safety trailer that can be brought to your location. This trailer teaches small children how to react during a fire and how to preplan getting out of a house fire alive. Sparky- The department also has a Sparky the fire dog (costume) which attracts the attention of small children and adults alike.
