[ARCHIVED] January First Friday at the Gadsden Museum of Art

Hatch Show Print Poster

Gadsden, AL - The Gadsden Museum of Art will have the following shows on display starting January 7 with a reception on the first Friday in February from 5-7 pm: Hatch Show Print, Est. 1879, located in the second floor gallery and down the main hallway; and Erin Anfinson’s Present Absence collection of mixed media works will be exhibited in main gallery.

Hatch Show Print is a printshop in Nashville, Tennessee which has been in operation since 1879 and has made prints to advertise artists such as Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and many more. Although it has moved locations, artist Celene Aubry and her colleagues still make prints the way the Hatch Family did in 1879. While several of the original print blocks still exist, the current printmakers create “restrikes,” recreating posters that otherwise would have been long lost; however the artists still have creative freedom and create many new designs to sell in their adjacent shop or for new musical artists who crave that vintage feel.

Present Absence includes mixed media works including encaustic works. Encaustic is a technique where artists use warm wax and mix with colors to create works. Anfinson uses this process as a way to connect to the environment around her. She states that the work is “an effort to create a sense of awareness about [the] diminished ecosystem [in the tallgrass prairie].” Anfinson’s exhibit will also include multimedia video display and paper collage works.

Lisa Price’s show, The Art of Living will remain on display until January 31st. All shows will be available for viewing beginning with Tuesday, January 7. Come join us during the first Friday reception on February 7th, light refreshments and public restrooms will be available from 5-7 p.m.
