The Gadsden Museum of Art will host an opening reception on Friday, May 4th. The reception will feature the Student Art Exhibit, and art by Michael Merry. There will also be light refreshments.
The Children’s Show will feature over 400 pieces from Etowah County and City Schools. Work from private and homeschool students will also be included. Students are from grades K3 to the 12th grade, and will feature projects from their classes. The show will open on April 17th and close on May 11th. Awards will be presented to the students at 6:30 on the 11th, and unlike last year teachers will be responsible for removing the art. With there being less and less art in education, the Student Show allows the museum to partner with local schools to showcase fledgling artists’ work. Through the show, children can be shown the importance of art, and be encouraged in pursuing their creativity.
Merry will present his mixed media pieces in “Time Out of Mind”. According to Merry, ‘Time Out of Mind’ refers to a span of time that extends beyond the reach of memory.” It plays on the idea of traditions that seem to have lasted forever but argues that “the only real constant is change.” Tradition and change can be seen in Merry’s work. He says, “The many elements that make up this body of work exist in similar kinds of space. Elements repeat. Sometimes they’re consistent across several compositions. Sometimes they have different iterations; changing colors, changing mediums, shifting from positive to negative.” The exhibit will be up through Friday, June 29th.
Exhibits are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served at the reception. For more information, contact museum staff at (256) 546-7365.
