On Tuesday, February 13, Gadsden City Council accompanied by many members of the East Gadsden community, gathered together in the rain to break ground on a new East Gadsden Community Center. The EGCC is one of five projects funded by a bond benefitted by the one percent tax increase.
The new facility will be constructed by Steven Vaughn Construction of Southside in the lot behind the current center. The current facility will be demolished once construction and move in concludes. The plans for the new center include a regulation size basketball court and elevated walking track. Members of the community will also have access to gathering spaces, an exercise room and a fully-equipped kitchen. Several community meetings were held prior to plans being drawn, and many of the suggested improvements have been included in the drawings.
The current EGCC will remain open through construction and hosts a wide variety of events each week. For further information and a complete calendar, please contact EGCC at 256.549.4673 or the Gadsden Parks and Recreation Department at 256.549.4680.
