September 2017 Programs at the GPL Library

 Hours: Sunday Closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 9-7 Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 9-5 

Attention: The Gadsden Public Library and its branches will be closed Saturday, September 2 through Monday, September 4 in observance of Labor Day. We will reopen Tuesday, September 5 at 9AM! Have a safe and happy holiday!

 ***** Stars Fell on Alabama Film Series

 When: Third Tuesday of the month, 6PM Where: Pitman Theatre 

Join us at 6PM on the third Tuesday of each month at the historic Pitman Theatre for a screening of a film that either takes place in or was filmed in Alabama! Brown bags and coolers are welcome (no food or drink will be sold on the premises). While we can’t advertise the movie’s title, people are welcome to call 256.547.8696, or 256.546.2886 to find out the name of the film that will be playing. All films will be rated G, PG, or PG-13. Stars Fell on Alabama Film Series is a joint venture of the University of Alabama’s Gadsden Center, the Gadsden Public Library and Downtown Gadsden, Inc.  ***** GPL Brunch w/ Books Book Club: Black & White by Ben Burgess Jr. When: October 14, 10AM-Noon Where: Lena Martin Room of the GPL

 When the prestigious law firm of Wayne, Rothstein, and Lincoln catches two major cases—a rape case where a white NBA star allegedly raped a black stripper, and a murder case where a black rapper allegedly killed a gay couple and two policemen—Bill O'Neil and Ben Turner are tasked to handle these racially charged litigations. The cases hit emotional chords with the two lawyers and force them to reckon with their interracial relationships and families. Will the racial tension of their cases destroy them or make them stronger?(Amazon) All individuals are responsible for their own purchases.  GPL Computer Classes Where: Computer Classroom (2nd Floor) of the Main Library 

Cost: Classes are offered free-of-charge to the community! However, there is a $5.00 deposit (per class) to hold your reservation. Your deposit will be returned to you the day of the class.

 PLEASE NOTE: Registration is required since space is limited to 12 people per class. Register for classes in person at the Computer Center Desk (2nd floor) or for more information, call 256.549.4699, ext. 119. A current (free & clear) library card is needed to enroll. If you don’t have a card, you may obtain one at the Circulation Desk, 1st floor of the Main Library. 

Computer Basics & Internet for the Beginner When: September 5 & 6, 1:30-4:30PM This is a two-day class (3 hours per day) for the absolute beginner or for those who simply need to know more about computers. No computer experience is required.

 ***** Downloading & Saving Your Docs & Files When: September 13, 1:30-3:30PM This class will teach you how to download & save documents and files that you find on the Internet or receive from friends or business associates via email. Prerequisite: Computer Basics for the Beginner

 ***** Microsoft Excel When: September 20, 1:30-3:30PM Learn to use Microsoft Excel for creating spreadsheets! Prerequisite: Computer Basics for the Beginner

The Gadsden Public Library Oral History Project! When: By appointment only. Where: Lena Martin Room of the GPL Want to share your nostalgic stories about what it was like growing up in Gadsden? Were you in the military? Do you have an interesting story to tell? Then join the Gadsden Public Library in our ongoing effort to preserve the oral history of Gadsden and Etowah County.
