Tuesday the Gadsden City Council voted unanimously to lease a portion of the Kiwanis Island at the James D. Martin Wildlife Park to the Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center for a dog park. The HSPRAC has been planning the park and looking for a suitable location for several years. HSPRAC friends and grants are funding the construction of the park.
The dog park will incorporate the current landscape, benches and other structures on the island. The goal for the park is to provide a safe place for dog owners to let their pets run free in a safe and controlled environment. The park will include waste disposal stations, clean water and a central fencing divider to allow for both small and larger dogs.
The central location of the dog park is key to the project, located by the Gadsden Mall the dog park will be accessible to all residents of the City, County and surrounding areas. Further expansion of the park is planned with future grant funding and earmarked donations from sponsors.
The dog park will provide a great amenity for pet owners and increase livability and quality of life in Gadsden. To donate to the dog park through the Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center call director Christi Brown at (256) 442-1347 ext. 224.
