Plans are underway for Youth in Government Day, which is scheduled for Tuesday, April 19. This program is sponsored by YMCA of the Coosa Valley, and will provide approximately 35 Gadsden City High School seniors an opportunity to participate in municipal government. Some students will serve as department heads and job-shadow city staff members. Other students will serve as elected officials and will perform functions of the Mayor and City Council members. Youth in Government Day begins at 8:15 a.m., with an orientation and oaths of office being administered. Throughout the morning, students interact with City officials and staff, and observe the Council's work session and official meeting. A luncheon is provided, along with a motivational speaker. In the afternoon, students return to the council chamber and conduct a mock council meeting. They discuss and vote upon ordinances and resolutions they have written in preparation for the day.
